Dom’s Preseason Poll for 2016

Dom’s Preseason Poll for 2016

The poll season continues tomorrow morning as the STATS FCS top 25 poll will be released. I am proud to be a voting member for the sixth year in a row and will be posting my poll each week during the season. So let’s not waste any time and reveal my preseason poll.

  1. North Dakota State – Most complete team in FCS, best defense returning with a backup QB that went 8-0 as a starter.
  2. Northern Iowa – Scary combo at QB and RB. Need to fill in pieces on defense, tough non-conference schedule.
  3. Sam Houston State – Amazing amount of talent, Jeremiah Briscoe takes over at QB, PJ Hall solid on defense, Bearkats will run away with Southland.
  4. Richmond – Spiders are the class of the CAA, Kyle Lauletta returns at QB. Solid defense is back for semifinalists from a year ago.
  5. Jacksonville State – Last year’s runners-up have Eli Jenkins back at QB and some more transfers from the FBS coming in. By far the best team in the Ohio Valley, will be a contender.
  6. Charleston Southern  – Brutal schedule to start the year with trips to Fargo and Tallahassee. Bucs have to find a quarterback, but with Coastal moving on, class of the Big South.
  7. South Dakota State – Jacks have to decide who will be their quarterback. Lot of solid pieces all around, including at wide receiver with Jake Wieneke.
  8. The Citadel – The Bulldogs put together a solid year last season, capped by beating a bad South Carolina team, but still an SEC squad. Close race to win the SoCon.
  9. Chattanooga – The Mocs are still talented, lost player of year at QB though, they and the Citadel will fight for the SoCon title.
  10. Illinois State – Jake Kolbe takes over at QB, Redbirds need to find a RB, Anthony Warrum back at WR is a nice start.
  11. Eastern Washington – Brutal non-conference schedule again for the Eagles. At Washington State and NDSU, hosting UNI. Cooper Kupp is the best player in FCS. But he needs a guy to throw him the ball.
  12. William & Mary – Tribe are a CAA contender. Strong defense and running game.
  13. James Madison – The Dukes are also in the mix for the CAA title. New coach and new QB make for some interesting questions to start the year.
  14. Northern Arizona – The Big Sky favorites, led by freshman of the year Case Cookus at QB. The Lumberjacks just missed out on the playoffs this year, set to make their mark.
  15. Youngstown State – It’s nine years and counting for the Penguins and the playoffs. Bo Pelini has a tremendous amount of talent, starting in the backfield. Watch YSU this year.
  16. North Dakota – UND should have been a playoff team last year, plain and simple. Think Bubba Schweigert’s team has the makeup to win seven to eight games again this year. QB has to stay healthy.
  17. McNeese State – The only unbeaten team during the regular season a year ago, then was dumped in the second round of the playoffs. New coach, but still lots of talent.
  18. Montana – Year two with Bob Stitt produced a lot of change in the offseason with players and coaches. The Griz have trips to UNI and Cal Poly early in the year. Brady Gustafson will be a year better.
  19. Colgate – The champs of the Patriot League won two playoff games last year, both on the road at New Hampshire and James Madison. Could be a contender again.
  20. Towson – The Tigers are now three years removed from their runner-up finish. Keep an eye on Rob Ambrose’s team, always in the mix.
  21. Villanova – It’s the final year for coach Andy Talley, Wildcats had injuries derail the last couple of seasons.
  22. Fordham– Chase Edmonds. Get to know his name. The Rams All-American tailback is fantastic. It’s them and Colgate.
  23. Portland State – Last year’s darlings of the Big Sky. Alec Kuresa is back at QB for the Vikings, who had  to deal with some terrible tragedy in the offseason.
  24. Eastern Kentucky – The Colonels were the only other contender in the Ohio Valley last year, we’ll see if they can give JSU a run for their money.
  25. Duquesne – The Dukes won the Northeast last year, should be the automatic qualifier this year as well.
