Countdown To 2013: #67

  • 24: That’s the new number of teams that will be eligible for the playoffs; as the field grows from 20 to 24. The FCS playoffs have blown up since 2010; growing from 16 to this new number. NDSU was the beneficiary that first year; grabbing the last at-large berth and made a run to the quarters and the playoff committee hopes for the same this year. With 3 additional at-larges it’s definitely a possibility; look no further than the Missouri Valley; where I have 5 teams in the playoffs this year: NDSU, SDSU, UNI, Youngstown State and Southern Illinois. The real question is can more than 1 school make a deep run? With how the committee matched schools up last year; 1 Valley team was out by the 2nd round; so until the committee changes its policy on geography there’s likely no way we’ll see 2 schools from the same league in the semis the way the Colonial did from 2007-2010.  Look for an updated post later with how the new bracket format looks and dates.

December 13-14th: Quarterfinals
